Ingredients

For the Fritters

  • 3/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 3/4 cup white whole wheat flour can substitute with all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon allspice
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 6 tablespoons butter cold and cut into pieces
  • 1/2 cup milk higher fat content for richer flavor
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup chopped apple tart apples give the best flavor

For the Glaze

  • 1 cup confectioner's sugar
  • 2 tablespoons milk higher fat percentage works best
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 400°F. Line a baking sheet with a silicone baking mat.
  • In a large bowl, whisk together dry ingredients. Cut in butter until mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  • Whisk together milk, egg, and vanilla extract in a small bowl. Add to flour mixture and stir until combined. Fold in chopped apple.
  • Drop batter by 1/4 cupfuls onto the prepared baking sheet. Bake for 11-13 minutes until golden brown.
  • Prepare glaze by whisking confectioner's sugar, milk, and vanilla extract. Brush glaze on fritters and broil for 2-4 minutes until golden and bubbly.
  • Brush remaining glaze over warm fritters, allow glaze to harden, and serve.

Notes

Best eaten the same day. You can substitute all-purpose flour for white whole wheat flour if needed. Tart apples provide the best flavor. Adjust flour if batter is too thin due to juicy apples.
